The name ‘Montecristo’ (translated as Monte Cristo) comes from Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’. As it was the favorite novel among cigarette workers at the time, the brand founder Alonso Menendez decided to combine the last two words of the nickname, Monte and Cristo, to create a single word and use it as the brand name. The Montessori brand logo consists of six golden knight swords surrounding a triangle centered around a lily flower, paying tribute to the sword mentioned in the novel. Monte Cigar is by far the largest cigar brand exported from Cuba and is also considered a benchmark for measuring the quality of other Cuban cigars.
